Editor’s Introduction

The following pieces were selected from contributions to our Winter 2021 Call for Submissions. For Riff/t, we sought both language and visual art that communicated separation, either by employing the motif generally, or by responding directly to another artist’s work. Based on this call, we received bold, original work from many excited artists, making for a fruitful selection process.

Since our beginnings at kNOw death press, we have aimed to compile bodies of work that capture conversations. Our inaugural issue under new medium press is no exception: the pieces herein complement each other, not by unity of sentiment, but by participating in a varied discussion of distance, emotion, and inspiration. From a diverse community of artists, we have selected works that meet this standard with clarity and resolution.

The pieces in Riff/t are arranged in a sequence, divided by central perspectives and themes identified by our editors. We suggest with this sequence a metanarrative of emotional progression.

We thank you for your interest, and hope you enjoy exploring Riff/t!
